人物介绍

Jianxin Xie is a Professor at University of Science and Technology Beijing and an Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering. He received his Ph.D. from Tohoku University, Japan. His research interests lie in controlled solidification and forming technologies for metallic materials, intelligent technologies for materials design and preparation/processing, and key technologies in materials genome engineering, etc. With his remarkable accomplishments in these areas, he was awarded one National Technological Invention Award, two National Science and Technology Progress Awards, three National Teaching Achievement Awards and two international academic awards. He has published more than 500 academic papers and holds over 140 patents.

Q&A Session

What are you best known for in your research community?

I am fortunate to pioneer China’s Materials Genome Engineering, found the Beijing Advanced Innovation Center for Materials Genome Engineering, and also launch the journal Materials Genome Engineering Advances. My team and I have attempted to develop AI-driven technologies for material design and processing, hoping to promote the rapid transformation of material R&D from the "trial-and-error method" to "rational design".


Why does this journal exist? Why did you accept the position of Editor-in-Chief?

A new industrial revolution in the context of AI demands a major shift in materials R&D. We believe that traditional R&D’s inefficiency and high cost can be addressed very well via materials genome engineering (MGE), a globally supported frontier field. Its interdisciplinary nature draws researchers from materials science, computer science, data science, and beyond. However, there has not been a journal dedicated solely to MGE researches and reporting on all three main technologies—high-efficiency computation, advanced experiment, data analysis, and their integration—despite strong demand. I took on Editor-in-Chief to foster MGE’s growth, aligning with my mission to advance the field.


What area of research has you really excited now? Why?

AI-enabled key technologies of materials genome engineering excite me most. The fusion of AI and high-efficiency computation, advanced experiment, and data analysis not only helps promote the rapid development of the concepts and methods of materials genome engineering, but also offers important support for the development of materials intelligence technology.


Why should early career authors publish in your journal?

We offer a cross-disciplinary platform with high visibility (indexed in ESCI, DOAJ,  CAS, CSCD and Dimensions databases) and dedicated support for early-career researchers—including fast peer-review cycles and feedback from top international experts in the field. Publishing with us provides early-career authors with opportunities to connect with a global network of academia and industry in the community of materials genome.


What do you hope this journal contributes to the field in the next 5-10 years? 

I hope it becomes the authoritative source for groundbreaking research in materials genome engineering, standardizes cross-disciplinary communication, accelerates translation of lab results to industry, enhances the role of disruptive technologies of materials genome engineering in materials R&D, ultimately shifts the materials R&D paradigm entirely.
